Dhofar
Dhofar is the southern governorate of Oman, bordering Yemen, with its capital at Salalah. Its monsoon-watered hills are the classic home of frankincense, traded since antiquity through ports such as Sumhuram (Khor Rori). Ruled at times by Hadramawt and by Yemeni dynasties such as the Rasulids, it passed to the sultans of Muscat in the 19th century, and from 1963 to 1976 it was the scene of the Dhofar Rebellion.
