Erzurum
Erzurum is a city on a high plateau in eastern Turkey, near the sources of the Euphrates. Known in late antiquity as Theodosiopolis, it guarded the routes between Anatolia, Iran and the Caucasus and was ruled in turn by Byzantines, Arabs, Armenians, the Saltukids and the Seljuks. The Congress of Erzurum of 1919 was an early step in the Turkish War of Independence.
