Khorramshahr

Also known as Mohammerah

Khorramshahr, formerly Mohammerah, is a port city in Khuzestan province, south-western Iran, at the meeting of the Karun river and the Shatt al-Arab. It was developed in the early 19th century by the Muhaysin branch of the Banu Ka'b, and under Sheikh Khaz'al it was the seat of a largely autonomous Arab sheikhdom until 1925. Iraqi forces captured it in 1980 during the Iran–Iraq War, and Iran retook it in May 1982.
