Lake Garda
Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, lying at the foot of the Alps between Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino. Romans built villas on its shores, notably at Sirmione, and in the Middle Ages its towns were contested by Verona, Brescia and Milan before Venice ruled most of them from the 15th century. In 1943–1945 Mussolini's Italian Social Republic placed its ministries in lakeside towns, especially Salò.
