Megali Idea

1844–1922 · 19th century · Also known as Great Idea

The Megali Idea, or Great Idea, was the aim of Greek nationalism to unite all Greek-inhabited lands in one state, with Constantinople as its capital. Named in a speech by Ioannis Kolettis in 1844, it guided Greek policy for nearly eighty years and led to the gain of Thessaly, Crete, Macedonia and other lands. It ended with the defeat in Asia Minor in 1922 and the exchange of populations with Turkey.
