Philip IV of France

1268–1314 · 13th century · Also known as Philip the Fair

Philip IV of France, called the Fair, was king from 1285 to 1314. His marriage to Joan of Navarre brought Champagne to the crown, and he seized La Marche and forced the Count of Bar to become his vassal in 1301. He clashed with Pope Boniface VIII, moved the papacy towards Avignon, and destroyed the Knights Templar to take their wealth.
