Wakhan
The Wakhan is a high, narrow valley in north-eastern Afghanistan between the Pamirs and the Hindu Kush, inhabited mainly by Wakhi and Kyrgyz herders. A route of the ancient Silk Road towards China, it was ruled by local mirs under Badakhshan. In 1893 and 1895 Britain and Russia set it as a strip of Afghan territory, the Wakhan Corridor, separating the Russian Empire from British India.
