Cîteaux Abbey

1098 · 11th century

Cîteaux Abbey, south of Dijon in Burgundy, was founded in 1098 by Robert of Molesme and a group of monks seeking a stricter observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict. It became the mother house of the Cistercian order, which spread across Europe under Bernard of Clairvaux. Its monks built up the walled vineyard of the Clos de Vougeot. Dissolved in the French Revolution, it was resettled by monks in 1898.
